When is the subjunctive required?
When the verb in the main clause of a sentence expressed an emotion or feeling, such as hope, dear, joy, pity, or surprise, the subjunctive is required in the subordinate clause.
We are happy that you like the flowers
Nos alegramos de que te gusten las flores
I’m sorry that you can’t come tomorrow
Siento que tú no puedas venir mañana
I’m afraid that Ana won’t be able to go with us tomorrow
Temo que Ana no pueda ir mañana con nosotros
It surprises him that Juan is so young
