Chapter 13 - Holding Flashcards
What is the purpose of holding?
To keep an aircraft within a specified airspace while providing IFR separation from other controlled aircraft
If two NAVAIDs are co-located to define a holding fix, which one must you choose?
It is the pilots decision as to which NAVAID to use
Is TACAN station passage allowed to be used as a holding fix?
No
When is ATC allowed to omit all holding instructions except the charted holding direction?
When is it a published and charted holding pattern
When a speed restriction is published for a holding fix, when must the aircraft be at or below that speed?
Prior to initially crossing over the holding fix
When does outbound timing begin for the outbound leg?
Over or abeam the fix, whichever occurs later. If unable to determine abeam, start timing when the turn to the outbound heading is completed
In the NAS, where leg is timing based off of?
The inbound leg
What does triple drift correction allow for when turning outbound/inbound?
It is the only method that allows for a constant angle of bank through inbound and outbound turns
Once established in holding, what should you do regarding fuel?
A fuel calculation should be carried out to determine how long it is possible to remain in the holding pattern
In the case where the holding distance from the holding fix to the VOR/DME station is short, what may be specificed?
A limiting radial
If you reach a limiting radial before the limiting outbound distance, what should you do?
Follow the radial until a turn inbound is initiated at the limiting outbound distance
