Stress and Eustress
subjective, can be both positive and negative, a battle of motivation vs. procrastination.
3 Stages of Stress Response
general adaptation syndrome: 3 stages
alarm stage - the panic
resistance stage - the long-lasting effect (rest is neglected, burnout, tension, straining blood pressure)
exhaustion stage - systems collapse, immune system failure, injury and illness risks
Subjectivity of Stress and its Appraisal Types
no defined “stress”, as we all feel it differently.
primary appraisal: threatening vs. non-threatening
secondary appraisal: controllable vs. non-controllable
Interactional Model of Stress
- Objective events capable of producing stress; 2. Cognitive appraisal; 3. Coping strategy comes into play between 2 and 4; 4. Physical arousal; 5. Illness.
Externalizing Coping Strategy
blaming others, aggression, risks, and behaviors (hostility, increased stress, cardiovascular problems, relationship issues)
Prosocial Coping Strategy
rationalization, assertiveness, mediation, physical (relaxation and breathing, exercise, time-management), emotional (social support, communication, emotion release), cognitive (constructive thinking, distraction, task-oriented mindset, acceptance)
Health Behaviors Coping Strategy
major causes of death include heart disease, diabetes, cancer
Positive Regard
someone thinking of you in good light, showing you kindness and respect.
conditional: you are only given this regard if you earn it through tasks or duties for others.
Congruence
adaptability, no inner conflict, support for growth motivations
Social Emotional Struggle
resilience and grit, growth mindset, perseverance, a cycle of humility, compassion, awareness, optimism, calmness, integrity
