Chapter 13: Electric Fields Flashcards
Define Coulomb’s Law
Coulomb’s Law states that the electric force acting between any two point charges is directly proportional to the product of their charges and inversely proportional to the square of their distance apart
Which direction does electric field lines point to?
Electric field lines point from the region of high electric potential to a region of lower electric potential. (from positive to negative)
Define Electric Field Strength
The electric field strength at a point in an electric field is the electric force exerted per unit positive charge placed at that point
Define Electric Potential
The electric potential V at a point in the field is defined as work done per unit positive charge by an external agent in bringing a small test charge from infinity to that point without a change in KE
What are equipotential lines?
Equipotential lines are lines joining points in an electric field that have the same potential. They meet perpendicular to the electric field lines
Define Electric Potential Energy
Electric Potential energy U possessed by a charge is defined as the work done by an external agent to bring the charge from infinity to its position in the field without a change in KE
Electric field
Region of space where an
electric force acts on a stationary charge
Why potential is constant inside a conductor?
