Persuading legislators to vote a certain way or to change a particular law
Lobbying
Growth that meets current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs
Sustainable Development
An environmental principle required that actions be guided by the desire to avoid or minimize pollution, thus reducing health risks and harm to the environment
Pollution Prevention
The standard of proof required in a civil action showing that it is more likely than not that something occurred
Balance of Probabilities
An environmental principle, often used in international law, that enables action to be taken to restrict or limit an activity prior to having actual proof of harm when a threat of serious harm or damage exists
Precautionary Principle
An environmental principle, contained in Canadian legislation, requiring that the costs of restoring the environment be directed toward those responsible for pollution
Polluter-Pays Principle
The reduction of a substance being released into the environment such that it is hardly measurable
Virtual Elimination
The defense that a defendant acted as any reasonable person would under the circumstances
Due Diligence
The responsibility for long-term protection of the environment; the protection of degradation to the environment
Stewardship
The specific area where a species lives, breeds, and cares for its young; the minimum area required to maintain a healthy population of a species
Critical Habitat
A study of the impact and potential consequences of proposed activity on the environment and of possible alternative courses of action
Environmental Assessment
In a civil action for negligence, a requirement of proof that the degree of care taken was that of a reasonable person
Standard of Care
A remedy granted by the court directing a party to continue or refrain from an action
Injunction
A civil action taken against a defendant when there has been an unreasonable interference with the use and enjoyment of property
Nuisance
To intentionally enter onto property without legal authority or consent; this action is prosecuted in a civil court
