Conflict follows a cycle, name the parts of the cycle
- disagreement
- conflict
- escalation

- resolution
There are five most common sources of conflict within a group. What are the sources?
-Competing
-Sharing
-Controlling
-Working
-Liking and disliking
Social dilemmas stimulate conflict by tempting members to act in their own self interest, on the group’s expense. There are six ways to create conflict this way:
-Member exploit a shared resource (tragedy of the commons)
-Member do not contribute their share (free riding)
-Member disagree on what happens after they decide how to divide resources.
-Member disagree on how to divide the resources.
-Member fell like they receive less than they should.
-Member takes more than their fair share of responsibility for a successful outcome, or avoid blame when the group fails. (self serving bias)
There are seven causes as to why a conflict escalates. What are the causes?
-Individuals defend their viewpoints they become more committed to their position (Perseverance of opinions)
-The Fundamental Attribution Error: people dislike people because they assume they behave the way they do because of their characteristics, rather than the circumstances.
-As conflicts worsen, members shift from soft to hard tactics.
-When their requests are denied
-Conflict escalates when they have the possibility to threaten each other.
-Negative reciprocity: negative actions provoke negative actions in others.
-The formation of coalitions that include members that were neutral in the conflict in the start.
Members of groups can use negotiation to resolve disagreements. What are the two types of negotiation?
-Distributive negotiation: dividing up resources
-Integrative negotiation: identifying the underlying issues to the dispute and then working together to find a solution that is satisfying to all parties.
Why is it important for members to openly communicate their motives and goals to avoid conflict?
Because many conflicts are based on misunderstandings and misperceptions
The Dual Concern Model identifies four ways to deal with conflict. Which?
-Avoiding
-Yielding
-Fighting
-Cooperating
