Chapter 13 Flashcards
Understanding Research Results II
Meta Analysis
An analysis of multiple papers on the same topic, with different methods.
what are the four steps of Meta Analysis?
1) collect papers
2) create common metric for papers through reading them
3) develop a system to code the dimensions of the study
4) derive a trend in the data(conclusions).
what are some problems with Meta Analysis?
1) the N is going to be different between the studies (you can weigh the studies differently based on the N).
2) software for doing weights and analysis is expensive.
heterogeneity
the quality or state of being diverse in character or content
what are the two types of rate analysis/
1) what rate do people exhibit symptoms of a disease (how many kids have the flu in the 3rd grade today).
2) Rate of performance/outcome on some test.
Incidence
the number of new cases over some period of time
prevalence
how many total people have it now, today, in total.
what study do you use to find incidence
longitudinal study
what study do you use to find prevalence
cross-sectional study
Sensitivity
proportion of people with the disease that also tested positive
specificity
the proportion of people without the disease who tested negative.
False negative
testing negative when you are postive
false positive
testing positive when you are negative
