Chapter 12 Vocab Flashcards
Cervical enlargement
Inferior cervical region of spinal cord. Supply upper limbs
Spinal cord
Major communication between brain and PNS inferior to the head
Lumbosacral enlargement
Inferior thoracic, lumbar, superior scarab regions. Supply’s the lower limbs.
Conus medullaris
Immediately inferior to the lumbosacral enlargement, spinal cord forms a cone like region.
Cauda equina
Roots of spinal nerves extend inferiority from the lumbosacral enlargement and conus medullaris and resemble a horse tail
Meninges
Connective tissue that surrounds spinal cord and brain
Dura matter
Most superficial and thickest membrane
Thecal sac
Dura matter that surrounds the spinal cord from the foramen magnum to the second sacral vertebrae
Epidural space
True space between walls of vertebral canal and dura mater
Arachnoid mater
Deeper than subdural space, wispy, thin
Pia mater
Third, deepest layer of meninges
Denticulate ligaments
Connective tissue septa extending from lateral sides of spinal cord to dura mater.
Filum terminale
Connective tissue strand that anchors conus medullaris and the cal sac to first coccygeal vertebrae
Subarachnoid space
Below arachnoid mater, above pia mater, blood vessels, CSF
Anterior median fissure and posterior median sulcus
Deep clefts partially departing two halves of spinal cord.
