Why is it important for P/O’s to know about the use of force?
They are authorized to use more force than the rest of society in the performance of their duties.
Define Professional Presence
Presence of a uniformed officer alone
Define Verbal Pursuasion
The use of verbal commands and speaking skills to talk to an individual and verbally requesting compliance.
Define Command Voice
Firmly given orders or requests by an officer.
What are Firm Grips
Used during verbal resistance, firm grips are used on shoulders, arms and back to guide a subject to the direction an officer wishes for them to go.
When is an officer allowed to draw or display their firearm?
When responding to:
- Violent Crimes
- Hidden or Fleeing Violent Crime Suspects
- Confrontations with known violent offenders
When may physical force be used?
Only to protect life
What are the NYPD requirements for using a firearm?
- To protect life ONLY
- When safe to do so

When encountering an EDP, a police officer should do what?
Isolate the subject, and contain them without causing injury or using force.
If responding to a call with an EDP, and the EDP reports having difficulty breathing, what action should the police officer take?
Request EMS immediately
What is positional asphyxiation?
Suffocation resulting from cuffing or Use of Force.

A defense to criminal charges.
