Chapter 12: The Nervous System Flashcards
Part of the central nervous system, protected by the skull
Brain
Part of the central nervous system, protected by spine, responsible for reflexes
Spinal Cord
Bone structure that protects the Brain
Skull
Fluid that surrounds the brain to prevent it from hitting the sides of the skull
Meninges
Fluid that surrounds the spinal cord inside of the spine
Cerebrospinal Fluid
One of the two main sections of peripheral nervous system, the one you do not control
Autonomic Nervous System
Part of the autonomic nervous system that brings you up
Sympathetic Nervous System
Part of the autonomic nervous system that brings you down
Parasympathetic Nervous System
One of the two main sections of the peripheral nervous system, this is the one you control (aside from reflexes)
Somatic Nervous System
Receptors on the outside of the body, used to pick up on things (senses)
Sensory Receptors
Name for something that causes movement or something to happen
Effectors
Parts the stick off the front of a neuron to capture signals
Dendrites
Part of a neuron that contains the nucleus
Cell Body
The “tail of a neuron”
Axon
End of the axon with little fibres that stick off to synapse with other dendrites
Axon Terminal
