Chapter 12 - Solids Flashcards
What are covalent-network solids?
They are solids held together by an extended network of covalent bonds.
What are metallic solids?
They are solids held together by a delocalized sea of collectively shared valence electrons.
What are molecular solids?
They are solids held together only by weak intermolecular forces.
What are crystalline solids?
They are solids in which particles are arranged in regularly repeating patterns.
What are amorphous solids?
They are solids in which molecules show no long-range order.
What is a body-centered cubic lattice?
It is a lattice in which an additional lattice point has been placed in the center of a cubic unit.
What is a face-centered cubic lattice?
It is a lattice in which an additional point has been added to each face (side of a cube) of the unit cell.
What are 3 characteristics of metallic solids?
- They are typically good conductors of heat and electricity
- They are malleable, which means they can be hammered into thin sheets.
- They are ductile, which means they can be drawn into wires.
What are alloys?
They are materials that possess characteristic metallic properties and are composed of more than one element.
What is the electron-sea model?
It is a model in which the electrons are visualized as being free to move throughout the metal.
What are ionic solids?
They are solids that consist of cations and anions held together by electrostatic attractions.
