What was the Sexual Revolution? What did it entail?
The sexual revolution was a revolution of thought in the 1960s and 70s that encouraged sexuality. New inventions like birth control and the legalization of abortion allowed for the deviation of sexuality from reproduction. Plus, gay rights activism brought about new acceptance of the community.
Historically, how was feminine sexuality controlled, and masculine sexuality encouraged?
- women’s sexuality was controlled and protected as sacred and only for her husband
- men’s sexuality was encouraged and they experienced much more sexual freedom, ie adultery by a man was ignored while by a woman it would ruin her life
How do the sex lives of upper and middle class individuals compare to lower class ones?
It was found by Alfred Kinsey that upper and middle class people had livelier sex lives, while lower class people did not.
Do gay men along with straight men have more sex than straight or gay women?
Yes.
Define the coital imperative.
The standard held to sexual intercourse as only being sex when there is penile penetration.
What was the Kinsey Scale?
A scale of sexuality produced by Alfred Kinsey. The scale would use a test to determine an individuals standing on the Kinsey scale, which would tell them their sexuality. The scale would scale from 0 to 6, 0 being completely heterosexual and 6 completely homosexual.
Define date rape.
Non consensual intercourse forced upon someone by an acquaintance.
How do men face pressure in sexuality?
- pressure to prove themselves as masculine via “scoring”
- pressure to perform for the woman, ie maintain an erection or pleasure her
