Acute
Having a short & severe course. A disease process characterized by a relatively short duration of signs and symptoms that are usually severe and start abruptly.
Anorexia
A psychoneurotic disorder characterized by refusing to eat over a prolonged period of time.
Self imposed starvation.
Assessment
Evaluation or appraisal of a condition. Including observing, gathering, verifying, and communicating pertinent data, usually info on the patient.
Auscultation
Listening to sounds within the body, to evaluate the condition of the heart, lungs, pleura, intestines, and other organs or to detect fetal heart sounds.
Borborygmi
Loud, gurgling sounds that accompany increases motility of the bowel.
Bruits
Abnormal swishing sound heard over organs, glands, and arteries.
Chronic
Developing slowly and persisting for a long period, often for the remainder of the person’s life.
Crackles
Short, discreet, interrupted crackling or bubbling adventitious breath sounds heard on auscultation of the chest, most commonly on inspiration. Produced by passage of air through the bronchi that contain secretions of exudate or are constructed by spasms or thickening, usually heard during inspiration. Used to be called rales.
