Chapter 12: Performance Assessments (posture, movement) Flashcards
Pes Planus
Collapsed arch of the foot… “Flat foot”
Describe muscle imbalances in a few sentences, using that term and overactive/underactive muscles
Muscle imbalances occur when length of muscles around a joint is compromised. Overactive muscles force compensations, underactive muscles allow compensations.
What 3 “views” should you assess in static postural assessment.
Lateral, anterior, and posterior.
What are the 5 kinetic chain checkpoints?
foot/ankle, knees, lphc, shoulders, head
knee valgus vs. knee varus
valgus - knees collapsed in varus - knees bow out
What should you be looking for in the anterior static assessment in regards to 5 kc checkpoints?
Ankles - pointing forwards, not flat or rotated outwards
Knees - don’t collapse in or bow out
lphc - one side not hiked
shoulders - level and not rounded
head - not tilting/rotated to one side or another
What should you be looking for in the lateral static assessment in regards to 5 kc checkpoints?
ankles - 90 deg. angle to leg
knees - not hyperextended or flexed
lphc - no excessive anterior or posterior tilt
shoulders - no excessive rounding, aligned with ears
head - not jutted forward
Where should the imaginary vertical line run through in lateral assessment?
middle of the ear, middle of the shoulder, femur, and lateral malleolus of ankle
Posterior static assessment diagram
What are the 3 common distortion patterns seen in static posture?
1.) Pes planus
2.) Upper crossed
3.) Lower crossed
Pes planus positions, overactive, and underactive muscles
Lower crossed positions, overactive, and underactive muscles
Upper crossed positions, overactive, and underactive muscles
What is the natural curvature of the spine? Explain in terms of C, T, L Spine and kyphosis / lordosis
REMEMBER CTL LKL.
Cervical - lordosis
Thoracic - Kyphosis
Lumbar - lordosis
Describe the overhead squat assessment (ohsa) starting position and movement
Feet pointing straight forward, shoes off, with arms fully extended overhead.
Squat to femur parallel, do 5 reps, view from anterior and lateral positions.
