Cultivation Theory
Media theory proposing that TV consumption shapes people’s worldview to resemble what is depicted on TV.
Depict media consumers as passive and easily manipulated.
Mere exposure effect
Finding a person, event, object, idea more acceptable/attractive over time simply by being exposed to it frequently
Mean World Syndrome
Theory that the more people watch TV, the more likely they are to believe that the world is dangerous and that they are at risk for being a victim of crime
Social Learning Theory
Theory proposing that people tend to imitate behaviours they see rewarded when performed by others.

Uses and Gratifications Approach
Approach to understanding media that emphasizes that people differ in numerous ways that lead them to make different choices about which media to consume; even people viewing the same media will respond to it in a variety of ways.
Views people as active media consumers.
Media Practice Model
Theory proposing that media use begins with identity, then proceeds to selection, attention, interaction, application, and back to identity.
Five uses of media
Entertainment, identity formation, sensation seeking, coping, youth-culture identification.
Super peer
One of the functions of media, meaning that adolescents often look to media for information that their parents may be unwilling to provide, in the same way they might look to a friend.
Sensation seeking
A personality characteristic defined by the extent to which a person enjoys novelty and intensity of sensation.
Cathartic effect
Media experience has the effect of relieving unpleasant emotions.
