What is respiration?
Process of moving air into and out of the lungs; breathing
What happens at the external respiration?
Exchange of air in lung capillaries. Oxygen gets inhaled into the air sacs of the lungs and passes through capillaries. CO2 passes from capillaries to air sac to be exhaled.
What happens in internal respiration?
- Exchange of gases in the cells
- Occurs simultaneously between cells and capillaries
- Oxygen passes out the bloodstream into the tissues
- CO2 passes out the tissues back into the bloodstream to travel to the lungs
What is the primary function of the nose?
- Air enters
- Exchanges air during inhaling and exhaling.
- Warms, moisturizes, and filters inhaled air
What is the opening though the nose carrying air into the nasal cavities?
Nares
The gas that makes up 21% of the air?
Oxygen
What is the nasal cavity?
- Lined with mucous membrane and fine hairs to help filter out foreign bodies
- Warm and moisten the air

Paranasal sinus
What is the pharynx?

The pharynx is divided into 3 parts, what are they?
- Nasopharynx
- Oropharynx
- Larngopharynx
What does the nasopharynx contain?
Contains the pharyngeal tonsils or adenoids
What are adenoids?
Collection of lymphatic tissue
What is pharyngeal tonsil?
- Also called the adenoid

What is the oropharynx?
The second division of the pharynx. Contains the palatine tonsils.
What is the laryngopharynx?
The third division of the pharynx, serves as a common passageway for food from the mouth and air from the nose.
