Chapter 12: Designs with 2+ IVs & Inferential Statistics Flashcards
What are the three possible types of designs with more than one IV?
Between-subjects factorial, within-subjects factorial, and mixed factorial
How do you make a factorial notation?
The amount of numbers indicates the amount of IV’s and what the numbers are is how many levels the IV is manipulated at (2x3 is two IV’s and one is manipulated as two levels and the other at three, total of six treatment conditions)
What effects are tested for significance in a two-way factorial design?
(1) the effect of one IV-also called a main effect of A (2) the effect of the other IV- also called a main effect of B (3) the interaction of the two IV’s- also called an AxB interaction effect
What is a two-way factorial design?
Two-way design- design with just two IV’s
Factorial design- when all the levels of one IV are crossed with all the levels of the other IV
What is a main effect?
A main effect of an IV means that there is a statistically significant difference among the means of the levels of the IV
What is an interaction effect?
An AxB interaction means that the effects of A depend on the level of B and vice versa
What are the possible outcomes of a two-way factorial design?
A main effect only, B main effect only, AxB interaction only, A main effect and B main effect, A main effect and AxB interaction, B main effect and AxB interaction, all three effects significant, nothing significant
