Chapter 12-Cell Cycle Flashcards
The cell cycle
The life of a cell from the time it is first formed during cell division of a parent cell until it’s own division into 2 daughter cells
Cohesins
Protein complexes that bind sister chromatids along their entire length after duplication
Centromere
A region of chromosomal DNA where the chromatid is attached most closely to its sister chrimatid
Centrosomes
Regions in animal cells that organise the microtubules of the spindle. Each centrosome contains two centrioles
Protein kinases
Enzymes that activate or de-activate other proteins by phosphorylating them
Metastasis
The spread of cancer cells to locations distant from their original site
Evidence of the evolution of mitosis
Proteins involved in binary fission are related to eukaryotic Tubulidentata and actin
Kinetochore
A specialised protein structure at the centromere(prometaphase)
The cell cycle control system
A cyclically operating set of molecules in the cell that triggers and coordinates key events in the cell cycle
Density dependent inhibition
The effect of an external physical factor on cell division in which crowded cells stop dividing
Anchorage dependence
For animal cells to divide, they must be attached to a substratum such as the inside of a culture flask or the extra cellular matrix of a tissue
