Chapter 12: Appendicular Skeletal Muscles Flashcards
levator scapulae function
elevates & inferiorly rotates scapula
levator scapulae origin & insertion
origin- transverse processes of c1-c4
insertion- superior part of medial border of scapula
latissimus dorsi function
agonist of arm muscle, “swimmer’s muscle”
latissimus dorsi origin (4) & insertion
origin- spinous processes of t7-t12, ribs 8-12, iliac crest, thoracolumbar fascia
insertion- intertubercular sulcus of humerus
deltoid function
anterior fibers: flex & medially rotate arm
middle fibers: agonist of arm abduction
posterior fibers: extend & laterally rotate arm
deltoid origin (3) & insertion
origin- acromial end of clavicle, acromion & spine of scapula
insertion- deltoid tuberosity of humerus
pectoralis major function
agonist of arm flexion, horizontally adducts & medially rotates arm
pectoralis major origin (3) & insertion
origin- medial clavicle, costal cartilages of ribs 2-6, body of sternum
insertion- lateral part of intertubercular sulcus of humerus
biceps brachii function
flexes forearm
biceps brachii origin & insertion
origin- supraglenoid tubercle of scapula (long head), coracoid process of scapula (short head)
insertion- radial tuberosity & bicipital aponeurosis
gluteus maximus function
extends & laterally rotates thigh
gluteus maximus origin (3) & insertion
origin- iliac crest, sacrum, coccyx
insertion- gluteal tuberosity of femur & linea aspera
rectus femoris function
flexes thigh, extends leg
rectus femoris origin & insertion (4)
origin- anterior inferior iliac spine
insertion- quadriceps tendon to patella & patellar ligament to tibial tuberosity
gastrocnemius function
flexes leg & plantar flexes foot
