Chapter 12 Flashcards
In a transverse wave what are the vibrations at an angle to?
They are at a 90 degree angle to the direction of travel
What is a type of transverse waves?
- light waves
Are seismic waves transverse or longitudinal?
Transverse waves
What direction do transverse waves move?
From left to right
What are 2 types of longitudinal waves?
- sound waves
- waves in a stretched spring
In longitudinal waves what are the vibrations the same direction as?
The same direction as the direction of travel
Define waves?
They are transfers of energy from one place to another that carry in formation
What is amplitude?
The maximum extent of a vibration (or oscillation), measured from the position of equilibrium
What is wavelength?
The distance between successive crests of a wave, especially points in a sound or electromagnetic wave
What is a period (in physic terminology)?
A length or portion of time
What is wave speed?
The speed at which a wave travels
What is the equation for wave speed?
wave speed = frequency x wavelength
What is a piece of apparatus called that is used to measure frequency?
A digital multi-meter
What is the piece of apparatus called used to measure the speed of sound?
The electronic timer or data loger
