Chapter 10 Flashcards
When does stretching occur?
When a material or object is pulled
When does compression happen?
When the material or object is squashed
What are the differences between elastic deformation and inelastic deformation?
In elastic deformation when stretched the object will go back to its original shape without breaking any bonds however in inelastic deformation is when the elastic limit is lower than the original load therefore it cannot return to its original shape
What is the equation for the extension of an elastic object?
Extension (m) = force (n) / spring constant (n/m)
Why does an object change shape when a force is applied?
Because the greater amount or energy exerted the greater the deformation
What is the equation for force by using mass and acceleration?
Force = mass x acceleration
What is the equation for momentum when mass and velocity are involved?
Momentum = mass x velocity
What is newton’s second law of motion?
Its that when an unbalanced force acts on an object
What is newton’s first law of motion?
It’s when balanced forces acting on them will stay at rest or stay in constant motion
What is inertia?
The tendency of objects to continue in their state of rest or of uniform motion
What is newton’s 3rd law of motion?
Its when every action has an equal opposite reaction
What 3 things affect a drivers reaction time?
- braking distance
- thinking distance
- stopping distance
How do you measure the stopping distance?
stopping distance = thinking distance + braking distance
What factors may affect the braking distance?
- greater speed
- poor road conditions (icy, wet)
- car conditions (bald tires, poor brakes, full of people)
