What was the Nullification Crisis?

A

South Carolina passed the Nullification Act, declaring that it would not pay these “illegal” taxes. Jackson supported a compromise that appeased the state gov’t that would gradually lower the tariffs. South Carolina accepted. But the states of the south would remember that the federal gov’t wouldn’t let them go their own way without a fight.
