chapter 12 Flashcards
What is Sampling Error
The amount of error between a sample statistic and the population parameter
What is the Distribution of Sample Means
collection of sample means for all the possible random samples of a particular size (n) that can be obtained from a population
What are characteristics of distribution of sample means
- The sample means pile up around the
population mean. - The distribution of sample means is
approximately normal in shape. - The larger the sample size, the closer the
sample means should be to the population
mean.
What is Critical Region
(for rejection of the null hypothesis): The area under the curve that contains all the values of the statistic that allow rejection of the null hypothesis
What is Critical Value
(of a statistic): the value that
bounds the critical region.
Central Limit Theorem
If we repeatedly take independent random samples of size n from any population, then when n is large, the distribution of the sample means will approach a normal distribution.
Conditions for Use of the one-
sample z Test
- sampling distribution of the mean must be normally distributed
- x̄ is known
- μ and σ are known
