either small or large groups can be effective, but dynamics change in different size groups

small group size <8
- cohesive
- fewer subgroups
- ideal for complex individual

large group size >8
- more cost effective
- open ended, ongoing
- less intense transference, countertransference

direct leader - tells what to do
co-leader - planner
indirect - reflective

arrange seating
- space and privacy are important
- members able to see and hear each other
- circular arrangement enhancing group work
