Crime Scene:
- DNA is extracted from small samples of bodily fluids at a crime scene
-> gel electrophoresis separates DNA into bands. Every person has a distinct “bar code”

Paternity Testing:
- compare DNA bands from mother and child -> any bands in child and NOT in mother, must come from father
