How stable is self-esteem over various parts of the life span?
first 20 years of life = foundation for adult socioemotional development
low during early childhood, increases throughout adolescence and early adulthood,
declines again during midlife and old age
What does an adult relationship look like coming from each of the attachment
styles?
secure attachment style: positive views of relationships, easy to connect / get close with
others, not overly concerned or stressed out about their romantic relationships
avoidant attachment style: hesitant about getting involved in romantic relationships and
tend to distance themselves from their partner
anxious attachment style: demand closeness, are less trusting, and are more emotional,
jealous or possessive
Discuss Erikson’s “intimacy vs. isolation” stage. What does it need as its
foundation?
intimacy: self-disclosure and sharing of private thoughts and feelings
- involves finding oneself while losing oneself in another person
- failure to achieve intimacy = social isolation
identity in adolescence → intimacy in emerging adulthood
How do internet initiated relationships compare to in person relationships?

relationships initiated online are more likely to last for more than two years! very
interesting
Types of love
- consummate love:
- affectionate love
- romantic love
romantic love:
complex intermingling of passion, fear, anger, sexual desire, joy, and
jealousy
affectionate love:
someone desires to have the other person near and has a deep, caring
affection for the other person. aka compassionate love
passion → affection
consummate love:
there are three dimensions rporposed by Robert J. Sternberg
1. only passion = infatuation
2. only intimacy and commitment = affectionate love
3. only passion and commitment = fatuous love
4. passion+commitment+intimacy=consummate love
