Chapter 12 Flashcards
What is an objective versus projective method of personality assessment ?
- Projective: contain short form answers of multiple choice where the test takers selects the best fitting response
- Projective methods: test taker gives structure to unstructured stimuli driven from unconscious motives
What is an advantage and a disadvantage of both projective and objective methods ?
- Objective
- advantage: can measure specific qualities
- disadvantaged accuracy issues, they are not objective in nature - Projective
- advantage: can examine the subconscious
- disadvantage: not as psychometrically sound
What are 5 kinds of projective tests?
- Inkblots
- Pictures as projective stimuli
- Words
- Sentence completion tests
- Figure drawings
Describe the pictures as projective stimuli method
The thematic apperception test has 30 picture cards. Examinee is asked to describe what lead up to, what is currently happening in, and what will happen in the scene
- responses are interpreted based on the needs of the examinee, the environment and their interaction
What are 3 major criticisms of the projective methods?
- The projective stimuli is one factor in the examinee’s responses, other factors like test taking environment also influence responses
- similar themes can appear across various stimuli suggesting the stimuli is not that ambiguous
- Psychometric soundness is questioned on protocol length, subject samples, external criteria etc.
Describe the behavioral observation assessment method
Observes specific behavior in the environment looking at the antecedents, the behavior itself and the consequences
What are 4 major issues with behavioral assessment ? Give some potential solutions
- inter-rater reliability
- solution: rigorously train raters or use an average judgment from all raters - Rater bias
- solution: use subjective measures - Self-monitoring objectivity
- Reactivity
- solution: use a hidden observer
