Chapter 11 - Organic chemisrty Flashcards
What is a saturated hydrocarbon?
A hydrocarbon that contains single carbon atoms
What is a unsaturated hydrocarbon?
A hydrocarbon that have double or triple covalent bonds between adjacent carbon atoms
What is an aliphatic hydrocarbon?
A hydrocarbon that contains carbon atoms joined together in straight chains, branched chains, or non-aromatic rings (alicyclic hydrocarbons).
What is an aromatic hydrocarbon?
Unsaturated hydrocarbon that contains a benzene ring
Homologous series?
Series of organic compounds that has the same functional group. Each member differs by the addition of CH2.
Functional groups?
group of atoms responsible for the characteristic reactions of a compound
General formula for: Alkanes Alkenes Alcohols Haloalkanes
Alkanes - CnH2n+2
Alkenes - CnH2n
Alcohols - CnH2n+1OH
Haloalkanes - CnH2n+1X
Empirical Formula?
Simplest whole number ratio of atoms of each element present in a compound.
Molecular Formula?
Actual number and type of atoms of each element in a molecule of a compound.
Isomers?
organic molecules have the same molecular formula but different arrangement of atoms.
Structural isomers?
same molecular formula but different structural formula.
Homolytic Fission?
Covalent bond breaks so that both bonding atoms receive one electron forming two radicals. (Radical - species with unpaired electron)
Heterolytic Fission?
Covalent bond breaks so that one of the bonding atoms receives both of the electrons from bonded pair, forming two oppositely charged ions.
