the branch of management that is responsible for recruitment, training and monitoring of employees.
importance of HR management?
1- recruit the right ppl 2- train them and develop them 3- employment contract 4- monitor them 5- payment incentives 6- morale and welfare
why would a firm want to recruit staff?
- expanding
- employees leaving
what is recruitment?
the process of identifying the need for a new employee, defining the job and attracting suitable candidates.
what is selection?
involves the series of steps by which the employees are interviewed, tested and screened for choosing the most suitable person.
advantages of external recruitment?
1- new experiences and ideas
2- no rivalry
3- wide choice
4- higher standard of applicants.
advantages of internal recruitment?
1- applicants background will already be known
2-already know the rules, no need for induction training
3- no money wasted on advertising
4- less time wasted
5- motivate other employees
6- staff wont have to get used to new management style
what is job description?
a detailed list about the tasks and responsibilities of the job. it will attract the right ppl for the job.
what is a person specification?
states the qualities that need to be possessed by applicant eg. qualification, level of experience etc.
what are the methods of selection?
CVs
Interviews
tests
and trial periods.
what are the methods of recruitment?
internal
external
what are employment contracts?
legal documents that includes terms and conditions of the job.
what is labour turnover?
the rate at which employees are leaving an organisation. calculated by:
number of employees that left x 100

usefulness of labour turnover rate?
- tells about employee morale and satisfaction
- shows how good the recruitment policy is
what are the reasons for high labour turnover rate?
- bad recruitment policy
- employee discontent
- low unemployment so ppl leave for better jobs
- type of job. fast food restaurants have 100% turnover rate.
what are the advantages of high labour turnover rate?
- new skills and ideas
- dummies might be leaving
- if u want to reduce workforce due to rationalisation anyway, that will happen by itself.
what are the disadvantages of high labour turnover rate?
- recruiting costs and training costs
- low output when worker leaves.
- difficulty to keep team spirit
- difficulty to establish regular familiar contact with customer.
what is induction training?
introductory training program to make trainees familar with the system and layout of business.
what is on the job training?
instructions given on the place of work on how job should be done. eg. articleship
what is off the job training?
internees are taken away from the workplace for extensive training. eg.work related college courses
why is training important?
-productivity
-flexibility
-less accidents
-better customer service
however they might leave and training is expensive.
what is employee appraisal?
the process of assessing the effectiveness of an employee against pre-set objectives.
what is dismissal?
being dismissed or fired from a job due to incompetence
what is unfair dismissal?
dismissing an employee by unfair means eg. race or religion or pregnancy, joining a union etc.
what is redundancy?
firing an employee because their job is no longer needed.
what is work life balance?
when workers are able to give the right amount of time to work, and personal life like family etc.
what are equality and diversity policies?
practices and processes aimed at achieving a fair organization where everyone is equal and at creating a mixed workforce.
what are the advantages of promoting equality?
- high employee morale
- top talent
- good reputation
- employee is promoted on merit not discrimination, so they are motivated.
what are the advantages of promoting diversity?
- more customers as consumers will be attracted to a diverse workforce
- creativity
- language skills, can provide services worldwide.
