what is management?
the task of setting objectives, organizing resources and motivating employees to help the business reach it’s overall objectives.
what are managers responsible for?
- setting objectives and planning
- organizing resources. (recruiting the right ppl, encouraging them to take authority and holding them accountable)
- motivating workers with financial or non financial rewards
- conducting activities for coordination
- controlling and measuring business performance.
what are the 10 roles of managers?
Interpersonal: F-figurehead (symbolic leader) L-leader (motivator) L-liaison (linking with managers of other businesses) Informational: S- spokesperson (communicates with outsiders) M- monitor (reciever of info) D- disseminator (sender of info) Decisional: N-negotiator E-entrepreneur (looks for new opportunities) R-resource allocator D-disturbance handler
what is leadership?
the art of motivating workers to work hard to achieve a common goal
what are the characteristics of effective leaders?
- desire to succeed and self confidence
- creative
- multi talented
- sharp mind.
what are the important leadership positions in a business?
- directors
- managers
- supervisors
- workers’ representatives
what is autocratic leadership
manager makes the decisions and workers are expected to follow them.
benefits of autocratic leadership?
- best in situations where quick decisions are needed eg. army.
- leader takes decision, has more experience. less chance of errors.
- confidential matters can be kept secret.
drawbacks of autocratic leadership?
- low motivation
- decisions do not benefit from employee input.
what is democratic leadership?
situations are openly discussed and workers are involved in the decision making process
benefits of democratic?
- high motivation
- input of workers
- builds team relationships
drawbacks of democratic?
- disharmony/ fighting
- time consuming
- no privacy
what is paternalistic leadership?
managers do what they think is best for workers. some discussion might take place but in the end managers decide.
what is laissez faire?
it’s french for “leave to do”. workers make decisions by themselves. eg. in creative fields.
advantages of laissez faire?
- motivational
- useful in creative fields or science labs etc
disadvantages of laissez faire?
- demotivated because unsupervised
- loss of security due to lack of direction
what is mc gregors theory X and Y?
it divides workers into two groups X & Y:
X workers are not creative, avoid responsibility and hate work.
Y workers are creative, accept responsibility and like work.
what are the factors that influence the decision of choosing a leadership style?
- time. if less time then autocratic cuz democratic is time consuming.
- nature of work. if it is creative fields or research institutes then laissez faire.
- training and experience of workers. whether they are prepared to take responsibility
- manager’s nature and experience and preference.
what is informal leadership?
when someone who has no formal authority has the respect of colleagues and has some power over them.
what is emotional intelligence?
the ability of the managers to understand their emotions, those of the people they work with to achieve a better business performance.
what are danial golemaal’s four main EI competencies?
- self awareness (be conscious of their feelings)
- self management (easily recover from stress, self control)
- social awareness (be conscious about other ppl’s feelings)
- social skills. (being able to communicate well and correctly understanding different social situations)
