Chapter 11// Biodiversity Flashcards
What is meant by the term ‘biodiversity’
Biodiversity = the variety of living organisms present in an area
Habitat biodiversity
Refers to the number of different habitats found within an area
E.g. woodland, sand dunes, meadows n streams
Species biodiversity
The different species present in the same area, can be split into
Species richness= number of different species living in a particular area
Species evenness= a comparison in the number of individuals of each species living in a community
Community
All the populations of living organisms in a particular habitat
Genetic biodiversity
Refers to the variety of genes that make up a species
Why is a great genetic biodiversity an advantage to a species
Because if a species has many different alleles they have lots of variation in genetic material which allows for better adaptation to a changing environment
Give one aim of CITES (Convention on International trade in Endangered species)
To conserve endangered species
To restrict trade of endangered species
abundance
the number of individuals of a species present in an area
