Chapter 11 (aprroved) Flashcards
Hydrocarbon
A compound containing carbon and hydrogen atoms only
Saturated vs unsaturated hydrocarbon
Saturated has single bonds only, unsaturated contains carbon-carbon multiple bonds
Homologous series
Family of compounds with the same functional group whose successive members differ by an additional -CH2 group
Functional group
The part of the organic molecule that is largely responsible for the molecule’s chemical properties
Hydrocarbon classification and their differences
Aliphatic - carbon atoms are joined in straight or branched chains, or non-aromatic rings
Alicyclic - carbon atoms are joined together in ring structures, with or without branches
Aromatic - some or all of the carbon atoms are found in a benzene ring
Alkynes
Homologous series of hydrocarbons containing at least one carbon-carbon triple bond
Alkyl groups
Side/branched chains - alkane with one less hydrogen where bond to main chain is
