Classroom climate
The psychology and sociology of the classroom which should be conducive to learning and achievement
“Withitness”
Refers to the notion that students need to believe that the teacher knows what they are doing at all times
Misbehaviour
Disruptive behaviour that negatively impacts the learning potential and cultural harmony within your classroom
Sense of classroom community
In the classroom, a widely shared feeling that teacher and students have common goals, are mutually respectful and supportive of one another and believe that everyone makes an important contribution to classroom learning
Sense of school community
The sense that all faculty and students within a school are working together to help every student to learn and succeed
Collective self-efficacy
People’s beliefs about their ability to be successful when they work together on a task (students and teachers)
What are some strategies for discussing a student’s problem behaviour with their parents?
- don’t place blame, instead, acknowledge that raising children is rarely easy
- express your desire for whatever support they can give you
- ask for information and be a good listener
- agree on a strategy (parents and teachers should have a partnership!)
What are some strategies for dealing with a student’s misbehaviour in the classroom?
- ignoring the behaviour
- cueing the student
- discussing the problem privately with the student
- promoting self-regulation
- using behaviourist techniques
- conferring with parents
What are some strategies for giving students a sense of self control?
- give students advance notice of upcoming activities and assignments
- create regular routines for accomplishing assignments
- allow students to set some of their own deadlines
- provide opportunities for students to make choices about how to complete assignments or spend class time
