Objective of Discpline
administering discipline is to create and maintain a safe and productive working environment for employees
Negative Discipline
focuses primarily on punishment as a way to get employees to do their work and comply with rules and procedures
Positive Discipline
is to create an organizational environment where employees take personal responsibility for their misconduct.

Timely due process
an established course of action that is taken within a reasonable time frame to investigate alleged employee misconduct
Employee Misconduct
- Unsatisfactory attendance and punctuality
- Infractions of organization policies, procedures, rules, or directives governing employee conduct.
- Failure to perform one or more job requirements in a satisfactory manner
- Offenses or misconduct that violate general rules of behavior or are specifically prohibited by law
Investigating allegations of misconduct
- What is the issue?
- Was the person aware of the policies
- Obtain all relevant documents for the discipline case
- Listen to every side of the story, unbiased manner
- Obtain evidence: the best evidence a supervisor can acquire for a disciplinary case is an employee’s confession of the wrongdoing.
- Document the investigation
- Maintain confidentiality
Criminal misconduct
misdemeanor: petty theft, trespassing, and vandalism
felony: grand theft, illegal drug use, rape.
management is legally required to immediately report the allegation to appropriate law enforcement officials.
Appropiate Corrective Actions
Informal for minor infractions and formal for more serious infractions. Informal are: Counseling, changing schedule, changing job duties, Formal Corrective actions: 1. Oral Reprimand 2. Written Reprimand 3. Suspension A. Suspension with pay or without pay 4. Dismissal
Demotion & transfers
Demotion: not often used, is a disciplinary action taken against an employee that results in a reduction in pay, benefits, status, and privileges.
Transfers: a disciplinary action taken against an employee that results in moving the employee to another unit or division within the organization.
Progressive Discipline: selecting the appropriate corrective action to address discipline issues, supervisors should use the least severe disciplinary action they judge is necessary
