In 1895 Cubans tried to overthrow the spanish, they put down the revolt with troops

Two New York newspapers were locked in a battle to sell the most newspapers and they used the Cuban revolt to make up ever more sensational stories. Stories were heavily anti Spanish and clearly untrue this created a deep resentment towards the Spanish.
