What was the Trail of Tears?
Forced relocation of Native American tribes to a designated “Indian Territory” caused by the Indian Removal Act. Mostly influenced the Cherokee.
What was the Second Seminole War?
Conflict between the U.S. government and the Seminole tribe. Resulted in the U.S. trying to enforce the Indian Removal Act and relocate the Seminole people to Indian Territory.
What was the Indian Removal Act of 1830?
Combined force migration, Indian reservations, and Federal land sales in a comprehensive dispossession and redistribution policy leading to the Trail of Tears and Second Seminole War.
Allowed the federal government to survey, divide, and auction off millions of acres of land.
What does ‘downriver’ refer to?
An euphemism for the near constant flow of enslaved laborers down the Mississippi River to the developing cotton belt in the Southwest.
Hundreds of thousands of Black families being broken apart by slaveowners and merchants, breaking up 20-30% of marriages.
What was the significance of State of Missouri v. Celia, a Slave?
Case that demonstrated that law not recognizing rape of enslaved people as a crime because they were property, not citizens with rights.
What is the Curse of Ham?
Pro-slavery theology that emphasizes obedience to enslavers, the biblical basis of racial slavery; justified slavery.
Who was Nat Turner?
Led one of the most famous antebellum slave rebellions.
- News spread quickly.
- Led an orgy of anti-Black violence and restrictions across the South.
- Having a white minister present during Black religious services.
- Transformed southern religion, anti-literacy and black-led churches were broken and placed under supervision of white ministers.
