Chapter 11 Flashcards
A unit of measurement; food energy is measured in calories
Calorie
The energy the body needs to perform life functions within all of its different cells
Blood glucose (blood sugar)
A high level of vitamins in the body causing toxic symptoms
Hypervitaminosis
Easier for arthritic hands to grasp
Large-handled flatware
Easier for post-stroke or one-handed residents to place food on utensils
Lip plate or plate guard
Offers more surface area to grab and more stability for residents who cannot easily grasp a cup
cup with handles
Easier for residents who cannot grasp a cup; the cup holding the liquid can stay on the table; the resident bends to drink from this
Straw
Cover keeps liquids in the cup for residents who have shaky hands, such as those with Parkinson’s disease
Cup with cover
The resident can grasp the bowl and keep close to the body rather than continuously bending toward the plate for each bite
Separate dishes
Mat is placed under the plate to prevent it sliding from away from the resident
Nonskid mat/ gripper material
Prevents teeth breakage by residents who have a reflex of biting down on items in the mouth
Rubber-tipped spoon
Resident with limited neck motion can drink because a section of the rim of the cup is cut away
Nosey cup
Used by people who do not open their mouths adequately, such as residents with end-stage dementias
Small spoon
Used by residents at risk for aspiration; the flow of liquid coming is slowed by a valve.
Cup with flow regulator
Used by people who have difficulty forming their lips around the rim of the cup; also helps by delivering a measured amount of liquid
Spout cup
