attitudes & job satisfaction
job attitudes definition
feelings or beliefs about one’s job, organization, supervisor, or another aspect of the workplace
types of job attitudes
cognitive - beliefs about the object of an attitude
affective - feelings about the object of an attitude
behavioral - intentions to act in a certain way
the attitudes-behavior relationship
the attitudes that people hold determine what they do.
- cognitive dissonance: any perceived incompatibility between behavior and attitudes
the major job attitudes
-job satisfaction: pleasurable or positive emotional state resulting from the appraisal of one’s job or job experiences
- work engagement: dedication, absorption, sense of excitement, and passion with one’s work
- organizational commitment: degree to which the employee identifies with and feels involved in the organization
the types of commitment
- affective: staying because you want to
- continuance: staying because you need to
- normative: staying because you ought to
measures of job satisfaction
- global measures: respond to statements pertaining to one’s overall satisfaction
- facet based measures: respond to statements pertaining to different aspects of one’s job (eg. pay, quality of supervision)
what is affect?
- feeling states - emotions & moods
- feeling traits - dispositional affect (stable tendency to experience certain moods/emotions) across situations
affective event theory
2 step appraisal process to evaluating events:
- concern relevance: is event beneficial, threatening or irrelevant?
- meaning analysis: cues from environment and person are evaluated, an an emotional reaction is created.
emotional labor
regulation of emotional displays that may be incongruent with what is felt
- surface acting: changing the expressions of emotions without changing the emotions themselves
- deep acting: changing the expressions of emotions and attempting to change underlying emotions themselves
impact of emotional labor
emotional dissonance: inconsistencies between the emotions people feel and the emotions they project
- long term emotional dissonance is a predictor for job burnout, declines in job performance, and lower job satisfaction
