stereotypes threats
fear of confirming a negative stereotypes sets in motion a self-fulfilling prophecy
(askedto state your gender on a math test, perform worse beacuse you think your gender will impact it)
stereotypes lifts
your sterotypes actually makes you perform better
prejudice
describes negative feeling or attitude toward someone based on their group membership
(ex:if you hold an opinion that women do not like to travel in their jobs and, for this reason, you do not select a woman for a job requiring travel)
discrimination
behavior directed against a person based on their group membership
explicit prejudice
occurs when we are aware of our prejudices and attitudes toward certain groups
implicit prejudice
negative attitudes you aren’t aware of that you must be assessed indirectly
(ex:when most people hear the word “kindergarten teacher,” they are more likely to picture a female)
implicit association task (IAT)
used ti test implicit prejudice on certain sterotypes
racism
prejudice or discrimination based on persons race/ethicity
- modern racism may simply be less explicit
sexism
prejudice and discrimination based on ones gender identity
contact hypothesis
direct contact between rival groups will reduce stereotyping, prejudice, ad discrimination
(ex:working with latinos will reduce your sterotype or prejudice toward them)
equal status
the contact should occur in circumstances that place the groups in equal status
social norms
a community broader social norms should favor intergroup contact and respect
personal interaction
contact should involve one-n-one interactions between menbers of different groups
cooperative activities
members of different groups should join together to achive superordinate goals
naturalistic fallacy
confusing what is with what ought to be
(ex: a person exercises, they will unequivocally have good health)
