Chapter 10.2: Plant Reproduction Flashcards
- differentiate between asexual and sexual reproduction in plants - describe the differences between the life cycles of seedless and seed plants - explain growth cycles in plants - Students should also be able to explain the life cycle difference by labelling or drawing diagrams
A period of no growth is called?
Dormancy.
The male parts of a flower are called?
Stamen ( 2 parts, anther and filament).
The female parts of a flower are called?
Pistil (3 parts, stigma, style and ovary).
The female sex cells in flowering plants are called?
Ovules.
The male sex cells in flowering plants are called?
Pollen.
Flowering seed plants are also called?
Angiosperms.
Non-flowering seed plants are also called?
Gymnosperms.
The type of plants that produce cones are called?
Gymnosperms.
The two stages in the life cycle of every plant are called?
Gametophyte and sporophyte stages.
Which types of plants alternate (swap) between gametophyte and sporophyte stages in the life cycle?
Seedless plants.
Mosses are an example of a vascular or non-vascular plant?
Non-vascular as they do not have roots or vascular tissues for transporting water.
Do mosses have roots or rhizoids?
Rhizoids. These do not have vascular tissue inside so cannot transport water.
There are 3 types of roots, true or false?
True (tap, prop and fibrous).
Which part of a flower turns into the fruit that animals can eat?
The ovary becomes the fruit.
What is the process called when pollen from the anther lands on the female stigma?
Pollination (this can happen because the pollen was moved by the wind or insects).
