Chapter 10 Vocabulary Flashcards
The U-shaped graph of a quadratic function
Parabola
A nonlinear function that can be written in the standard form y=ax^2+bx+c where a does not equal 0.
Quadratic function
The function Y equals X squared which is the most basic function in the family of quadratic functions
Parent quadratic function
A quadratic function in the form y=a(x-h)^2+k where A does not equal zero. The vertex of the graph of the function is (h,k)
Vertex
The line that passes through the vertex and divides the parabola into symmetric parts
Axis of symmetry
For y=ax^2+bx+c where A is greater than 0, the y-coordinate of he vertex is the minimum value of the function
Minimum value
For y=ax^2+bx+c where a is greater than 0, The y-coordinate of the vertex is the maximum value of the function
Maximum value
Any equation that can be written in the standard form ax^2+bx+c=0 where A is not equal to zero
Quadratic equation
The process of rewriting a quadratic expression so that it is a perfect square trinomial
Completing the square
The formula below that can be used to find the solutions of the quadratic equation ax^2+bx+c=0 where a does not equal zero and b^2-4ac is greater than or equal to zero
Quadratic formula
The expression b^2-4ac of the associated equation ax^2+bx+c=0; also the expression under the radical sign in the quadratic formula
