Looking back at Andrew Jackson’s presidency, explain one policy or action that agreed with the U.S. principles and explain one policy or action that disagreed with the U.S. principles.

A

During Andrew Jackson’s presidency, there were policies that both agreed and disagreed with U.S. principles. Jackson supported the common people rather than the wealthy. He wanted the common people to have a say in the government. Jackson also opposed the unfair privileges given to some by the Bank. Loans were usually given to the wealthy leaving farmers and merchants in an economic crisis. However, some of Jackson’s actions did go against the U.S. principles. One is the use of the spoils system. This went against the merit system of earning a job. Another negative action was the enforcement of the Indian Removal Act. This went against human rights of Native Americans. Jackson had both successes and failures regarding U.S. principles.

Q

Explain two ways that political changes influenced the growing democratic spirit in the U.S. by the 1840s.

A

Political changes influenced the growing democratic spirit in the U.S. during the 1840s. One way was that more white men were able to vote because voters did not have to own land. This resulted in an increase in the number of people voting. Another change was the caucus system was replaced by nominating conventions to select presidential candidates. This meant more people were involved with the selection of the candidates. Lastly, the spoils system allowed commoners to participate in governmental decisions, a privilege most believed should not belong only to the wealthy. There were many political changes that affected the United States in the 1840s.
