Q

What is learned helplessness? Please provide an example.

A

Learned helplessness is a state that occurs after a person has experienced a stressful situation repeatedly. They come to believe that they are unable to control the situation, so they don’t try, even when opportunities for change become available. An example would be continuing to smoke even though you’ve tried to quit many times, which may cause you to believe that you’ll always smoke.

Q

What is the difference between external locus of control and internal locus of control? Why is it that people with an internal locus of control tend to succeed more on average?

A

External locus of control is people who attribute their success or failure to outside influences. Internal locus of control is people who base their success on their own work and believe they control their life. People with a more internal locus of control behave more positive (healthier) and have greater confidence in their ability to influence outcomes through their own actions.

Q

According to the general adaptation syndrome (GAS), our body responds to stress in three stages. What are they? Briefly describe each.

A

Alarm stage is the body’s initial symptoms the body experiences when under stress, which also triggers the fight or flight response. Resistance stage is where the body starts to repair itself, your body begins to normalize but is still on high alert. Exhaustion stage is prolonged or chronic stress. Struggling with stress for long periods can drain your physical, emotional, and mental resources to the point where your body no longer has the strength to fight stress.
