Why: because many immigrants were Catholic, they had the backing of the Pope so could form a conspiracy to overthrow the government

- Scott argued he was free cuz his master died and he had been free before but court said he had no right to even sue or be a citizen under constitution cuz he had lived in a slave state when master died and that Missouri compromise was unconstitutional cuz Scott was property
