Primary Assessment meaning
Identification and treatment of immediate life-threats
Uncontrolled External Bleeding
Also know as exsanguination
Should be controlled before the assessment process proceeds
Airway assessment
Patent or obstructed(blood, vomit, foreign object) ASM process
Breathing assessment
How is it? Needs to be spontaneous
R - Rate 12-20, over 28 or under 8 is extremely bad
R - Rhythm - Normal or abnoral
Q - Quality - Labored, Shallow
Poor signs of breathing
Shallow, labored, retractions, use of accessory muscles, nasal flaring, 2-3 word dyspnea, tripod position, sniffing position
Circulation assessment
Carotid pulse palpation
C - color
C - conditom
T - temp
and moisture
Rapid exam
30-60 seconds - head to to exam(feel for DCAP-BTLS, jugular venous distention, deviation from trachea from midline in the neck, spinal step off from vertabra not aligned with the rest), look for crepitus, subcutaneous emphysema, equal rises and falls
