Hand hygiene
Three components for handwashing: soap, running water, friction
Use soap and water if hands are visibly soiled using 3 to 5ml of soap with warm water for at least 15 to 20 seconds.
You may use alcohol-based product 3 to 5 ML rubbing hands together vigorously, covering all surfaces, rubbing until dry.
Additional Hygiene Measures
Cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing/cough etiquette.
Try to stay 3 feet from those with a cough or have them wear a mask.
Keep hair pulled back, natural nail short, remove jewelry from hands and wrists if possible.
Protective clothing (PPE)
Masks, gloves, gowns, protective eyewear
Physical environment
Do not place items on the floor (even soiled laundry)
Don’t shake linens
Clean least soiled areas first
Use plastic bags for soiled items
All specimens and biohazard containers or bags
Any liquids for client care into drain
Maintaining Sterile Field
Advise clients to refrain from touching anything, only sterile items can be in a sterile field
keep in mind 1 inch border is unsterile,
do not reach across or above sterile field,
don’t turn back to sterile field,
if adding items keep 6 inches above the field.
Keep all surfaces dry.
Discard any packages torn, punctured, wet.
Equipment
Clean area above waist level for sterile field
Check all packages are dry and intact, also check expiration date.
Make sure waste receptacle is close.
What flap of sterile field is open first?
The flap furthest away from the body, then the sides one at a time, last flap closest to the body.
Pouring sterile solutions
Place cap face up
Hold bottle with label in palm of hand
Pour 1 to 2 ML into available receptacle
Sterile solutions expire after 24 hours
Sterile gloves
Don sterile gloves after sterile field is set up
Inside of the gloves is considered contaminated
Outside of the gloves considered sterile
