Chapter 10 - Lubricants Flashcards
Lubricants
Reduces the friction by substituting fluid friction for solid friction
Full-film Lubrication
Lubricant completely separates the two surfaces.
Boundary Lubrication
Separation is incomplete.
Used when film between mating surfaces becomes too thin to prevent contact.
Lubricant Forms
Gaseous - helium, argon, inert gases
Solid - synthetic, mineral powders
Liquid - fatty oils, mineral and synthetic oils
Cohesive - paste, grease, waxes, soaps
Most Common substance added to oil
Soap Thickeners
Lubricant Application
Petroleum- based and synthetic oils
Greases
