Chapter 10 - Emergency Equipment Flashcards
BCF preflight check
Correct number and location
Secured in bracket
Red disc at side of handle
BCF Extinguisher operation
Push catch
Aim at the base of the fire
Squeeze the handle
Sweep the flames - short burst or continuous
Halon extinguisher preflight check
Correct number and location
Secured in bracket
Safety pin and tamper seal in place
Needle in the green band
Halon operation
Pull safety pin
Aim at the base of the fire
Squeeze carry handle and firing lever together
Sweep the flames - use short bursts or continuously
Halon duration
10-15 seconds if used continuously
Halon range
1.5-2m
Halon angle limitation hold
60 degrees of vertical
How to operate Halon for rear cargo compartment
Pull safety pin
Hold extinguisher upright using handle
Insert extinguisher into fire extinguisher connector hole
Squeeze carry handle and firing lever together
Empty entire extinguisher into rear cargo compartment
Halon precautions
PBE should be worn
High concentrations of agent can lead to dizziness, impaired concentration and coordination difficulties
Before discharging in flight deck, O2 masks and smoke goggles to be work and regulators set to 100%
Do not allow any metal part of the extinguisher to make contact with live wires
If fighting fluid fires avoid getting too close to reduce risk of scattering or splashing fluid surface
Halon after use
Replace safety pin and restow extinguisher in brackets
Report the use of the extinguisher to PIC for entry into tech log
Ventilate the cabin
Always consider dousing area with water to prevent reignition
PBE preflight check
Correct number and location
Secured in bracket
Tamper seal intact
Vacuum foil bag not expanded
PBE operation
Open stowage box by pulling red strap
Open vacuum sealed bag by pulling red tag and remove unit from foil pouch
Both hands inside neck seal palms facing
Bend forward and insert head through neck seal and position oronasal mask over nose and mouth
Pull straps forward to activate oxygen generator and inflate the PBE
Pull straps backwards to seal oronasal mask over the nose and mouth
Adjust PBE from outside - oronasal mask, flaps front and back, glasses through PBE
PBE duration
Approximately 15 minutes
What do you do if the PBE starter candle fails?
Pull adjustment straps for a second time as this may dislodge the pin and actuate the PBE
If the PBE fails to actuate, the action of forcefully exhaling will start oxygen generation
If unsuccessful, use another
Removing a PBE
Move to a safe area clear of the fire/toxic fumes
Disposal of a PBE
Place used PBE in a safe place away from heat/fire and water. Use galley floor/lavatory to cool
Treat PBE as a dangerous good. Place PBE in an atlas box then place into lavatory and lock lavatory door
PBE precautions
Be careful not to damage neck seal when fitting. Be especially careful with glasses, necklaces and earrings
Do not interfere with neck seal once it is in place as this may allow smoke/fumes into PBE
Ensure long hair is contained within the neck seal inside the PBE
After use do not remove in the immediate presence of fire due to oxygen saturation of the hair. Brush hair with hands to remove any oxygen particles
Do not use water to cool the PBE
Take caution when removing the PBE as the generator may be hot and cause injury
Crash axe preflight serviceability
Correct number and location
Secured in position
What can the crash axe be used for
Physical obstructions in the event of a crash
As a lever to pry away a panel or partition of the fire source is difficult to locate
As a basic survival aid in a remote area - Chop wood for fires and shelter etc
Crash axe precautions
Never use the blade to cut through panels inflight as circuitry and hydraulic lines could be severed
Prising with the spike end must be done gently and cautiously
Post use crash axe
Return to stowage in flight deck
Smoke goggles preflight check
Correct number and location
Not damaged
Operation of smoke goggles
Remove goggles from stowage
Place over eyes with strap secured at the back of the head
What type of portable oxygen cylinder is carried?
Avox 120 litre cylinder
Preflight check oxygen bottle
Correct number and location Secured in brackets Minimum 1500PSI dispatch pressure Dust covers in place and no oil or grease on fittings Oxygen mask present and sealed
Oxygen bottle operation
Remove oxygen bottle from bracket and prepare out of view of passengers
Secure bottle to self
Check no kinks in mask tubing
Remove dust cover/s and insert metal connector/s from mask into outlet/s
Turn on using the on/off control knob
Check oxygen flow to mask - look, listen or feel (green flow indicator, listen for hissing, feel airflow on cheek)
Fit mask around nose and mouth and secure with elastic band.
Note time oxygen was administered
Monitor oxygen bottle pressure - do not allow below 50PSI unless an emergency
Turn control knob off when no longer required
Oxygen bottle precautions
Do not drop or bump cylinder
Do not handle bottle or mask with greasy hands
Do not use oxygen in the vicinity of any form of open flame
Remove excess heavy makeup or grease from casualty’s face
When the gauge shows 50PSI, if possible discontinue use
Oxygen bottle considerations
The PIC must be informed ASAP regarding use of oxygen in the cabin
In an emergency, two oxygen masks can be inserted into both outlets of the bottle to deliver oxygen to two people simultaneously
Oxygen bottle durations
1 mask attached - 30 minutes
2 masks - 15 minutes
Oxygen after use
Stow oxygen bottle securely back in original stowage position
Advise the PIC regarding oxygen bottle use
CS to document on CS report
Dispose of oxygen mask and tubing
Oxygen mask preflight check
Correct number and location
Bag sealed
Oxygen mask operation
Open sealed bag
Check for kinks in tubing
Insert metal connector into outlet on bottle (push and turn)
Check oxygen flow to mask - look, listen or feel - flow indicator, listen for hissing, feel airflow on cheek
Fit mask around nose and mouth and secure with elastic band
Oxygen mask after use
Advise PIC regarding use of oxygen mask/s. The CS should document this on the CS flight report
Dispose oxygen mask and tubing
Laerdal pocket mask preflight
Correct number and location
