How to operate Halon for rear cargo compartment
Pull safety pin
Hold extinguisher upright using handle
Insert extinguisher into fire extinguisher connector hole
Squeeze carry handle and firing lever together
Empty entire extinguisher into rear cargo compartment
Halon precautions
PBE should be worn
High concentrations of agent can lead to dizziness, impaired concentration and coordination difficulties
Before discharging in flight deck, O2 masks and smoke goggles to be work and regulators set to 100%
Do not allow any metal part of the extinguisher to make contact with live wires
If fighting fluid fires avoid getting too close to reduce risk of scattering or splashing fluid surface
Halon after use
Replace safety pin and restow extinguisher in brackets
Report the use of the extinguisher to PIC for entry into tech log
Ventilate the cabin
Always consider dousing area with water to prevent reignition
PBE preflight check

Vacuum foil bag not expanded
PBE operation
Open stowage box by pulling red strap
Open vacuum sealed bag by pulling red tag and remove unit from foil pouch
Both hands inside neck seal palms facing
Bend forward and insert head through neck seal and position oronasal mask over nose and mouth
Pull straps forward to activate oxygen generator and inflate the PBE
Pull straps backwards to seal oronasal mask over the nose and mouth
Adjust PBE from outside - oronasal mask, flaps front and back, glasses through PBE
PBE duration
Approximately 15 minutes
What do you do if the PBE starter candle fails?
Pull adjustment straps for a second time as this may dislodge the pin and actuate the PBE
If the PBE fails to actuate, the action of forcefully exhaling will start oxygen generation
If unsuccessful, use another
Removing a PBE
Move to a safe area clear of the fire/toxic fumes
Disposal of a PBE
Place used PBE in a safe place away from heat/fire and water. Use galley floor/lavatory to cool
Treat PBE as a dangerous good. Place PBE in an atlas box then place into lavatory and lock lavatory door
PBE precautions
Be careful not to damage neck seal when fitting. Be especially careful with glasses, necklaces and earrings
Do not interfere with neck seal once it is in place as this may allow smoke/fumes into PBE
Ensure long hair is contained within the neck seal inside the PBE
After use do not remove in the immediate presence of fire due to oxygen saturation of the hair. Brush hair with hands to remove any oxygen particles
Do not use water to cool the PBE
Take caution when removing the PBE as the generator may be hot and cause injury

Do not handle bottle or mask with greasy hands
Do not use oxygen in the vicinity of any form of open flame
Remove excess heavy makeup or grease from casualty’s face
When the gauge shows 50PSI, if possible discontinue use
Oxygen bottle considerations
