Chapter 10 - Construction Operations and Jobsite Management Flashcards
Back Charges
An amount of money charged against a subcontractor for work that the general contractor performed because of subcontractor failed to do so
Concrete Washout Station
A temporary container installed on a construction site to collect all water runoff from the washing trucks, tools, and equipment associated with concrete. The container may be prefabricated and delivered or built on site
Dry Shacks
Facilities that may be constructed on-site or brought in as modular units equipped with tables and storage lockers. They provide a dry place for workers to eat lunch and change their clothes. Union agreements often require that the contractor provide a dry shack on site
Laydown Area
A designated area on the building site where large orders can be stored and sorted in an organized manner so that parts can be easily identified for use on the project
Site logistics plan
A layout plan identifying the placement of all temporary facilities needed during the construction stage of the project, such as the office trailer, crane, storage, security, fencing, dumpsters, and portable toilets
Straw Wattles
An erosion control product made of compact straw or other materials such as geotex fibers, bound into a tight, tubular roll that comes in a 10 to 25-ft lengths. These are often specified in an swppp
Transmittals
A tracking document that serves as a cover notification to any communications, submittal, or shop drawing being transmitted among the project participants.
Will-Call
Acts as a verbal confirmation of an order that has been placed prior to the date is actually due for delivery. The will call, generally made by the superintendent, occurs just before the scheduled delivery date.
3 issues supers must be concerned with…
Three issues that the superintendent must be concerned with when trying to manage construction operations or subcontractor coordination, material and equipment deliveries, and productivity.
Scheduling subcontractors, three fundamental rules…
When scheduling subcontractors for the job, the three fundamental rules that you should try to follow are to resist bringing in subcontractors onto the job until you’re 100% ready for them; to make sure that once you bring them on the job, they have everything they need to proceed; and pay all subcontractors promptly upon completion of their work.
Will call order?
A will call acts as a confirmation of an order that has been placed prior to the date it is actually due for delivery that will call generally consists afternoon before the scheduled delivery and confirms or denies that the delivery date is still a go.
Three factors that impact construction productivity…
Factors that negatively impact construction productivity are crowded. Workspaces, poor coordination of work activities, poor supervision or lack of supervision, and inexperienced or poorly trained workforce, not having the proper tools and equipment, adverse weather conditions, confusing plans and specs, changes in work plan, and inefficient job site layout.
Three environmental factors that cause project delays?
Environmental issues that can interfere with a construction schedule and cause unexpected delays on the job are encountering soil erosion problems, encountering endangered species on site, having to protect vegetation on site, trying to protect and preserve wetlands during construction, and discovering historical or cultural artifacts while excavating.
Laydown area?
A lay down area is a designated storage area within the construction site that is used for sorting out large orders such as structural steel.
Four items on a site logistics plan
Location of the field office, the location of the temporary utilities, the location of the storage trailers, the location of the lay down area, the location of the portable toilets, the location of dumpsters, on-site parking areas, the security fencing, and the entrance and exit Gates.
