Chapter 10 Flashcards
The capacity for work, or the force that helps us do things with vitality and intensity
Energy
A relatively new branch of psychology that focuses on positive human functioning
Positive psychology
A mental state in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus. This is characterized by complete absorption in a task that elicits a deep feeling of enjoyment
Flow
A term used by psychologists that says humans are hardwired to notice negative events more than positive ones. People actually experience far more positive moments in life than negative, which psychologists refer to as the “positivity offset”
Negativity bias
The emotional high that follows performance and success
Pride
A mindful state that carries the urge to savor your current circumstances and find ways to integrate them into your life more fully
Serenity
Based on an experiment first conducted by retail giant Sears that provided evidence for the cause-effect chain reaction and correlation between employee attitudes, consumer behaviors, and bottom-line profitability. When employees feel valued, they are more productive and engaged, which leads to increased customer satisfaction and loyalty, which leads to higher sales and levels of profitability, ultimately resulting in higher shareholder value
Employee-Customer Profit Chain Theory
Any stimulus that follows a response and increases the probability that the response will occur again
Reinforcer
A type of reward that is given after a response occurs
Positive reinforcer
A Freudian term describing someone obsessed with his or her own self-image, alluding to the mythical youth who wore himself out trying to kiss his own reflection in a pool of water
Narcissism
A planned activity designed to motivate employees to achieve an organizational objective
Incentive program
